Old City of Jerusalem is one of the most sacred places in the world, a center for the Islamic, Christian, and Jewish religions.
The old city is a walled-in area of one-kilometer and is divided into four areas, one each for the Christians, the Jews, the Muslims, and the Armenians. Each quarter has its own unique feel and atmosphere, with sacred sites within each area.
The three main quarters have a number of sites, but the Armenian Quarter is just a small area where about 2,500 Armenians live, and have lived for thousands of years.
There is much to see for everyone, whether you are of one of these religions, or just want to see some ancient history.
In the Jewish Quarter, the Western Wall is famous as it is the only part of the wall that remains of the Jewish temple, making it the most sacred site for Jews in the world.
Visitors are allowed to go to the wall, but have to be separated by gender, with women being required to wear modest clothes. Many bring a written prayer and leave it on the wall. There are Tunnels under the Western Wall in which visitors can see the wall underneath the ground.
The Muslim Quarter has a livelier atmosphere with an array of vendors selling all kinds of products and souvenirs. The Shuk is an old shopping center where visitors can find anything that they can imagine.
This quarter is home to the Temple Mount, with the Dome of the Rock, which is only open to Muslims, and the Al-Aqsa Mosque that is open to everyone. The Temple Mount is where Abraham was said to have sacrificed his son Isaac.
The Christian Quarter contains close to 40 sites that are considered to be holy. Pilgrims and priests from all over wander the streets. The Church of Holy Sepulcher is supposed to be the site of where Jesus was crucified and afterwards, buried, making this a very popular place for Christians to visit.
